A funeral service will be held today for Ruth Forrest Barkin of Jamaica Plain, owner of seven shoe stores in New Hampshire, Connecticut, and the Boston area, who died Thursday at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She was 87.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. Barkin attended Toledo University and, with honors, was the first woman to be graduated from Boston University School of Management.

Mrs. Barkin was the founder of Nails or Not, an international nail polish business. She also sold life insurance for Sunlife of Vermont.

Mrs. Barkin was a life member of Beth Israel Hospital, Brandeis University National Women's Committee, the Cavendish Club, and was a Gray Lady during World War II. She was a member of Temple Israel of Boston, and was a weekly volunteer in the intergenerational program.

She leaves a daughter, Bobbe F. Jacobson of Jamaica Plain; a son, Carl of Florida; two stepdaughters, Dr. Nan Case and Leslie Bachrach, both of New York; a sister, Hermione Fishman of Bourne; and two grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. at Temple Israel of Boston.
